Indigenous Students Resource Center: Fall Semester 2026 Paiwan Traditional Nose Flute Workshop Series
This Fall semester, the Indigenous Students Resource Center has invited national treasure and Teacher Sauniaw Tjuveljevelj to launch a series of events centered on the traditional Paiwan nose flute culture.
A nose flute plays more than just melodies; it carries the emotions, longing, and cultural memory of the Paiwan people passed down through generations. Teacher Sauniaw Tjuveljevelj will lead us in exploring the cultural significance of the Paiwan mouth and nose flutes. Through a two-day cultural exchange and hands-on skill experience, you will deeply appreciate the beauty of Paiwan culture. All faculty and students of Feng Chia University are sincerely welcome to join us.
Session 1: Hearing - Encounter with the Nose Flute Intangible Cultural Heritage: The Inheritance and Innovation of Paiwan Mouth and Nose Flute Culture Date: Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026 Time: 6:30–9:30 p.m. Venue: Room 117, Recreation Building (Indigenous Students Resource Center, Feng Chia University)
Session 2: Playing - Learning the Art of the Nose Flute The Teacher will guide us in making a traditional Paiwan nose flute. Date: Friday, Oct. 30, 2026 Time: 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 1:30–4:30 p.m. Venue: Room 117, Recreation Building (Indigenous Students Resource Center, Feng Chia University) Capacity: Limited to 12 participants (Lunch provided)
Speaker Introduction: Sauniaw Tjuveljevelj An inheritor and artisan of the Paiwan mouth and nose flute, she is also the only female inheritor of this tradition. Highly skilled in playing and crafting Indigenous musical instruments, she infuses traditional ancient melodies with new interpretations and innovations by combining mouth and nose flute performances with vocal chanting of Paiwan ballads. Having served as a Lecturer at various schools and organizations, she has been teaching the crafting and playing of mouth and nose flutes for 30 years. She has been awarded the Indigenous Research Publication Award by the Ministry of Education. Her works include "The Elegance of the Taiwanese Twin-Pipe Mouth and Nose Flutes," "Life NASI," "Listen~ The Voice of Women," and "Never Left." She was nominated for Best Indigenous Singer and Best Indigenous Album at the 23rd and 27th Golden Melody Awards. She has also been invited to perform internationally and collaborate with renowned musicians, bringing traditional Indigenous music to Japan, Australia, Northern Europe, the United States, North Africa, Southeast Asia, and beyond.
